Picture Books

Meet The Oceans by Caryl Hart, illustrated by Bethan Woolvin (Bloomsbury Children’s Books)

Both the bright, bold artwork, and the rhyming text make this book really fun to read aloud to children. My boys both enjoyed learning more about the world’s oceans in this follow up to Meet The Planets by the same author and illustrator team.

The Perfect Fit by Naomi Jones, illustrated by James Jones (Oxford Children’s Books)

Triangle doesn’t feel like she fits in with the other shapes so she goes searching for somewhere she truly belongs… I was inspired to write this story about shapes, diversity and learning to be yourself after my son, then aged 3, struggled to fit in when he started at nursery. It’s illustrated by my husband, who is an award-winning book designer, and it is our first book together!

I Talk Like A River by Jordan Scott, illustrated by Sydney Smith (Walker Books)

This is an incredibly moving story about a boy who sometimes finds words difficult. The powerful imagery that compares his speech to a river, makes it really engaging for young children. It was inspired by the author’s own experience of stuttering as a child and is illustrated by a Kate Greenway Medal winner.

Fiction

Picklewitch & Jack and the Sea Wizards’s Secret (Faber & Faber)

Jack is really excited when he learns that this year’s school trip is a visit to the beach to look for fossils. His best friend Picklewitch isn’t impressed, until she discovers the secret lair of the local Sea Wizard… This is the third book in this series and has black and white illustrations throughout.

The Last Bear by Hannah Gold (HarperCollins Children’s Books)

When April’s Dad accepts a post in a remote scientific research station in Bear Island in the Arctic, he tells her there are no polar bears left there anymore. But one summer night, April meets one. Her bear is lost and hungry, can April find a way to save him? With themes of friendship and climate change this is a beautifully written, poignant story.

Books for Parents

100 Great Walks With Kids by Jen and Sim Benson (Bloomsbury)

This book features 100 walks based all over Great Britain. It includes walks ranging from 1-5.5 miles. As well as pictures and a map of each walk, it also includes symbols showing if the walk is dog and buggy friendly and if there are any toilet facilities en-route. I’m really looking forward to using this book with my own family as lockdown eases.

Hello, Mum by Polly Dunbar (Faber & Faber)

When award-winning illustrator Polly Dunbar had her boys, she started to doodle some of the magical, and not so magical, moments. They’ve now been collated into this book which would make a perfect gift or keepsake for any parent. Hello, Mum perfectly captures the highs and lows of having small children from the all-consuming new-born years to the hilarity, (and occasional tantrums) of toddlers and the fantastic logic of pre-schoolers. As a mum of two, it completely resonated with me!

Five Minute Mum: Give Me Five by Daisy Upton (Penguin Books)

This is a brilliant book packed full of five minutes games that help your kids with everything from maths to phonics. Crucially, the games are so fun, your kids won’t even realise that they’re learning, which might just mean you get five minutes peace…
