We adore the Lake District here at Mini Travellers. We are lucky too, it is only a couple of hours drive from us and we try and visit as often as we can. We also head up there to stay for long weekends and family holidays too. We often choose to stay in a cottage so we have the space, so have identified some cottages perfectly located for you to visit our Top 5 Things to do in the Lake District with Kids.

Beatrix Potter World

1. The World of Beatrix Potter – 5 Things to do in the Lake District with Kids

2016 marks the 150 year anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter and the fabulous Beatrix Potter attraction is also celebrating its 25th year of being open.

This attraction can be done as part of a day trip including the idyllic Lake Windermere as it isn’t far, and it has a very reasonable admission price.   The attraction is really stunningly and lovingly crafted from the offset. You can see Miss Tiggywinkes laundry, see Jeremy Fishers ‘slippy sloppy house’  and see the nest that the sly fox invited Jemima Puddleduck to make with his dastardly tricks in mind (and many more!!). To read more about The World of Beatrix Potter you can read some guest posts here and here.

If you are thinking about visiting The World of Beatrix Potter you could stay at Wayside Cottage in Ambleside which is only 6 miles away

2. Wray Castle, Ambleside

The National Trust says:

Wray Castle came to us without its contents so you will not see a ‘typical’ National Trust house full of paintings, furniture and antiques with an accompanying owner-family history through the ages. What you will see is a ‘tired’ but fascinating building with hints of its ‘grand’ past and plenty of signs of its varied history. Make sure you join one of our free tours to get its full life story.

If you’ve children to entertain you’ll be pleased to know the rooms may be empty of grand possessions but full of kids having fun in our dressing up and castle-building spaces, perfect for a wet day in the Lakes! There’s plenty to do outdoors too, like rope swing, den-building and trails, in our family-friendly gardens and grounds.

My 5 year old daughter visited last year with her Grandparents and cousin and thoroughly enjoyed their day out.

3. Muncaster Castle –  5 Things to do in the Lake District with Kids

This historic haunted castle, is still a lived-in family home.  Set in 77 acres of woodland and gardens against the backdrop of the Western Lake District fells, this Castle has something for everyone.  They put on fantastic family events in the school holidays from knights jousting to firing arrows. You can see how one of our readers loved it here.

4. Cruise on Derwentwater

The Guardian agrees that a cruise on Derwentwater is one of the best things in the Lake District to do with Kids. The Keswick Launch is affordable and flexible and the kids will love the wooden boats that speedily zip between the jetties.

5. Cookery School at Staveley

I think the Lucy Cooks Cookery School in Stavely though has to be a firm favourite with readers.  This is a rainy day activity, a fun activity, something both the kids and the adults can enjoy and is all round good fun.  I have this on my own bucket list and can’t wait to take my three it comes so highly recommended. Why not take at look at their website.* note not sponsored in any way just popular!

If you wanted to visit Lucy Cooks you could stay in Elterwater  which is only half an hour away at family friendly cottage Braegarth.
