After our 7 days staying in a less than average hotel in Rwanda with no running water we were beyond excited to have chosen Inzu Lodge as the first stop on the second part of our adventure in Rwanda.  The first part had been all about the rugby and teaching in schools and you can see our video about this below, but the second part was all about exploring more of this beautiful country.

We had decided to travel to Gisenyi mainly to spend some time on Lake Kivu.   Lake Kivu is the country’s largest body of water and one of Africa’s Great Lakes. Bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, it forms part of the Great Rift Valley.  Watersports a plenty have developed around the banks of Lake Kivu and we had thought to try Paddleboarding or Kayaking with Kingfisher Journeys. However on arrival at Inzu Lodge we decided to just sit and look at the lake and catch up with ourselves.

When you have a view out to Lake Kivu like this from a comfy bar with sofas and nice food, you don’t really have to go anywhere else to soak up the beauty of it.

Speaking of nice food we really did enjoy the home cooked food at Inzu Lodge.  The menu reminds you that things are cooked to order and lots of the trip advisor reviews I had read said make sure you are prepared to wait for the food when you order, so we went armed with this expectation.

To be honest I don’t think it took any longer than anywhere else, but when it cam, the breakfast – oh the breakfast – it was a true delight. Particularly after a week of omelette and stale bread!  I think it may have been the nicest French toast I had ever had, although the French toast at Ruzizi certainly gave it a run for its money later in the week.

The lodges at Inzu are as you can see made of wood and are basic inside, but immaculate.  The beds were comfy and additional beds and mosquito nets provided for the kids.  We fit the 5 of us in their family lodge, with an extra double mattress.

Family Lodge

The bathroom for the family lodge is just behind it.  It’s a drop toilet (hold onto the small ones) and the shower (with warm running water – wohoo) was amazing.

We had a lovely relaxing time at Inzu Lodge and wished we could stay longer to get our breath back.  The small swing in eye sight from the family lodge and the gardens were enough for the kids to run about it and enjoy.

We spent the evening telling each other silly jokes and playing uno before retiring to our comfy bed.

Izu Lodge was perfect (oh an very cheap!).  Definitely worth staying here if you are in Gisenyi.

NB: We paid full price for our accommodation at Inzu Lodge and have not been compensated in any way for this review.

Pin for later?
