Grab the kids and go kite flying this weekend! New research shows families are missing out on amazing outdoor hobbies and skills

Kite Flying

We love kite flying at this time of year. The late afternoons are simply stunning on the Wirral Peninsula – the skies are amazing and the colours are beautiful. So I was a little sad to read that outdoor hobbies and skills are being lost because families can’t afford (or don’t know how) to leisure like they used to, according to a recent study by Visit No            rth Norfolk.

For us as a family, flying a kite is one of the loveliest things we do. It’s usually a Sunday activity. On a day when we don’t really want to do very much, but we want to be out and about in the sun.
We are lucky that we live near the beach, but you can use any outdoor space to fly a kite – a school field, or a park; even an empty supermarket car park will do!
According to the study
  • 64% of adults have never moored a boat (I have to say we haven’t either though!)
  • 42% have never flown a kite (a bi-weekly activity here)
  • 51% have never gone crabbing (We love this, and have some great memories of doing this near Abersoch!)
  • 48% have never navigated using a compass (this is actually on our list for the Summer and we are hoping to use Treasure Trails when we go to stay at Tattershall Lakes.
Just take a look at our photos to see how much fun it can be, all for a ÂŁ4.99 kite! Or maybe head to North Norfolk and try it there!

  1. Some of my very best childhood memories are of flying a kite with my Dad. It’s something I really need to do more of with the kids. Your photos are beautiful! x
