Where should you go on a Family Holiday in Mid Wales? We can recommend Lower Cefn Perfa!

During October half term we decided for a number of reasons to holiday in the UK rather than abroad and were lucky enough to work with Original Cottages and head down to Wales to stay in a beautiful Country House, Lower Cefn Perfa,  just outside Newtown.

The location of the property couldn’t really have been more perfect. It was down a country track giving us the feeling of remoteness, with views of the hills from the hot tub and a babbling brook running through the huge gardens; yet the house was only about 3.5 miles away from Newtown and a large Asda when we needed emergency supplies of pasta, biscuits, wine etc

On arrival at the House late (ish) on Friday evening it was difficult to work out exactly what the gardens were like, but first impressions of the house was that it was superb, just about as close to perfect as you could get for a place for 10 people to stay in for a week. There was plenty of space, large luxurious rooms, and a kitchen and utility room to die for!

We were lucky that a friend of ours had arrived earlier in the evening and had accepted the Tesco delivery I had arranged to be delivered – helpfully he had even put it away and cooked us some dinner too. We washed fajitas down with some alcoholic beverages and retired to bed for the evening.

I slept well, very well. Only awaking at about 10am to find the kids playing hide and seek in the garden with the daddies in full on pouring down rain! We are British after all!

We had a very lazy day on the Saturday which involved a lot of nice food, some hot tub time and short walk up on the hills behind the house. Also in the rain. Thankfully rain wasn’t actually a theme for the week and sun arrived on Sunday for the rest of the week.

What made the house so brilliant for 10 people was the amount of space. 3 Large rooms downstairs for people to spread out into.  A games room with a snooker table, a lounge with lots of sofas and a huge kitchen/dining room. The games room had a cupboard stuffed full with board games and cards and the snooker was an early evening treat. WiFi that actually worked also kept 6 Kids happy. As finding WiFi on holiday that allows for 6 Kids on you tube is no mean feet.

On Sunday we went to Powis Castle and on Monday, Montgomery Castle. This area of Wales is full of interesting things to explore, although in October you do have to check when things are open. The owners of the house have a vineyard close by (the wine they left for us was lovely) but it wasn’t open on the Monday when we had intended to visit.

We also visited Attingham Park in Shrewsbury from the house – it was just an hour away. It’s an impressive National Trust property that had a great spooky trail on when we visited.  They change their programme a lot though so just check what’s on and when if you’re visiting. You can have a look at the little video we made here:

After heading out for some part of most days we would return to the house, let the kids play in the hot tub for a while before dinner and then make a fire.

The open fire was perhaps one of my other favourite things about the house. We didn’t need it but there is a large fire guard you can use too. Whilst it truly wasn’t cold enough to light a fire whilst we were there – it was a unseasonably warm October half term – I don’t think there is anything nicer than getting everyone snuggled in front of the fire and drinking hot chocolate.

During the week the house was used for epic games of hide and seek. We actually lost a 3 year old for a little too long at one point! We played long games of Princess UNO round the large dining room table, played sardines and hide and seek in the large gardens and also managed to find time to do some colouring and diary writing too.

I asked the kids what their favourite things about the house was and got the following replies:

Izzy: My favourite room was the room on the top floor with the double bed, as it had good hide and seek places
Eve: I liked the double room because Mummy sleeps in there and there was snuggly covers
Eve: I also liked the nice big walk up the hill [Although I would query that as she complained the whole time!].
Izzy: The Massive hide and seek garden
Lily: Powis Castle – and playing hide and seek
Lily: Daddy liked the Snooker table and the open fires
Lily: Also liked the huge Hot Tub with seats in and a head rest
Izzy:  Liked her really big bedroom

It’s safe to say that we loved our week in Wales and had some good old fashioned family fun in a beautiful Country House.  You can rent Lower Cefn Perfa from £1250 a week.

Why not PIN this so you can remember it!

  1. I’m sooo in love with those cute cottages! If I ever make it to Wales I’ll be sure to stay in one of the country houses you suggested. It looks so cozy inside and out! #MondayEscapes

  2. It looks nice! Very different from Cardiff, which is the only place in Wales that I have visited, and wasn’t too impressed by. Have been thinking that it must me more exciting things in the countryside.

  3. Oh nice! Who wouldn’t like to stay in a place like this? I am game for a tub and a chimney with fire. And the owners have a vineyard? That sounds amazing. The other thing I like is the idea of having groceries delivered to the place. In that way, you do not have to waste time going to the store and packing the stuff. #MondayEscapes
