Digger Land in Devon – Our Family Review

I think it is safe to say that my little boy is digger obsessed! He owns a fleet of diggers and is never without one. Going past a construction vehicle of any sort (as long as it is yellow!) causes much excitement on any car journey accompanied by a call of ‘wow!’. So when we were asked to review Digger Land whilst on holiday, I am not sure which member of the family was most excited!

Digger Land was easily reached from our holiday home in Dorset and was well signposted. Things got off to a good start with a digger at the roadside entrance! Car parking was plentiful and close to the entrance so it was easy to pop back to the car rather than carry things round for the day.

As we walked towards the park, I have to admit, it looked a little run down…the play area and dodgems looked like they needed freshening up, however, don’t be put off by this… on entrance to the park there really is a different perspective…

As we entered the park itself, the new Little Tikes Play Area caught our attention and so this was our first port of call. Here, there are a number of water play toys as well as an excellent selection of the famous Little Tikes cars. Our toddler had a fantastic time playing here and as it was adjacent to the park (with some adventurously high slides) everyone was happy…

The play area was small and relatively well contained which meant our nearly two-year-old could have a bit of freedom as he explored the diggers in the water trays and enjoyed running down the small slope in the variety of cars. In fact, you will notice that I fail to get eye contact from him in any of the photos which just shows how engaged he was! The only thing I would say is that as there are a variety of water play activities on offer be prepared with a change of clothes for when the sleeves get too soggy!

Although he would have played here for longer, at this point our 7 year old had spotted the variety of digger related activities on offer from her vantage point at the top of the slide and was keen to explore more. As we arrived at the start of the day (the park opens at 10am) we really did have our pick of activities and although initially disappointed that she wasn’t quite tall enough to drive the 4×4 Police Car, we quickly discovered that she could pretty much participate in everything…

There is a good variety of digger related activities on offer, from driving a huge JCB – under the careful supervision of a member of staff (which I couldn’t resist having a go at either!) to driving smaller vehicles independently. There are also a few challenges; treasure hunting for pieces of metal in a pile of gravel, hook a duck and skittles, all testing your skills at controlling the digger, something that was surprisingly tricky to do! There are also a few rides which we discovered our toddler could join in with too – a digger related roundabout (which he loved and called out ‘more!’ when we finished) and Sky Shuttle- where you are lifted high into the air. Ground Shuttle provided a bumpy ride over the ground and then there was Spin Dizzy – something that we preferred to watch rather than take part in as people were spun round and lifted up under the watchful eye of the driver who worked really hard to tailor the ride to each audience.

The staff throughout the day were fantastic. Each one took time to not only explain that particular attraction’s features but also chat to the children about their day. The fleet of young but very attentive staff really did help make the day and were a world away from the bored and disinterested ride operators we have experienced at other theme parks…

One area for development would be the food…although we had brought a picnic, we discovered too late that there was a small under cover picnic area and so had retreated into the small café to warm up. There was a ball pit and bouncy castle to entertain the children but the catering was limited to burger and chip type meals (being Gluten Free I had to resort to a portion of chips!) and a healthier option, such as a baked potato, would be a welcome addition to the menu…

Our initial impressions of Digger Land were that it was very small and we were dubious that the day would hold enough to entertain us all. However, the activities never really had queues (even though it was the Easter Holidays) and we left feeling satisfied that we had done everything we wanted to do.

It’s a little pricy to get in but I would say that unlike most theme parks, we felt that as adults we were able to get more involved in the activities and therefore justify the £19.95 a little more than normal (children under 90cm get in free).

Digger Land seem to be branching out and according to the website there will soon be a site in Worcester which is much closer to us and we would certainly visit again for a special occasion or as a family treat, after all, who can resist the chance to drive a real JCB!

  1. That looks awesome, it makes a change from the usual soft play and gentle stuff kids get these days and a chance to see what it’s like playing with the ‘big boys toys’

Great review and excellent photography to boot!
