Billionaire Boy – The Ultimate Drive in Family Theatre Experience!

Billionaire Boy – The Ultimate Drive in Family Theatre Experience!

Having really missed being able to enjoy live theatre these past 14 months, we were excited to hear about Car Park Party’s production of “Billionaire Boy”, which is currently on tour across the UK.

Their fantastic idea follows the premise of a drive in movie, but instead you get to enjoy an all singing and dancing live production of this David Walliams favourite, all from the comfort and safety of your own car!

It sounded like the perfect “covid secure” family night out, so my 8 year old twins and I set out to see for ourselves.  We were gifted the tickets by Car Park Party, but all the opinions in the review are our own.

Billionaire Boy is a story we personally know well and really enjoy, having both read the book and seen it on TV.  It tells the story of twelve-year-old Joe Spud, who is the richest boy in the country!  His Father has earned a fortune through a new type of loo roll and as a result he has amongst many other things, his own sports car, two crocodiles as pets and £100,000 a week pocket money.  Sadly for Joe, what he doesn’t have is any friends. So he decides to leave his posh school and start at the local comp. But of course things don’t go as planned for Joe and life becomes a rollercoaster as he tries to find what money can and can’t buy!

This production is true to the original story and is both funny and heart warming, highly visual, wonderfully performed, and has lots of great song and dance routines.  You are also encouraged to flash your lights and honk your horn along the way, which is I guess the drive in version of giving a round of applause! My two were thoroughly enthralled throughout and we quickly forgot we were watching from the car and became immersed in the whole spectacle.

The event was really well organised, with clear instructions sent prior to the event, tickets scanned through the windows, well directed parking – (although if you want to be near to the front make sure you get there nice and early) and toilets and food available on site should you want them.

We took a large array of snacks with us to avoid leaving the car but I could see lots of families popping out to the relevant vendors safely and happily for food too.

You listen to the sound of the production through your car radio and watch the performance on both the large stage in front of you and on a big screen,.(much like you would at a large music concert), and this all works really well.

This was the first time we’ve been to an event like this, and I have to say I was most impressed.  The show really was good and watching it snuggled up with a few cosy blankets in the car made it a really exciting experience for children.  There are still a few dates and venues left to run this month, and if there is one near you I would certainly recommend it as a bank holiday weekend family treat!  Check out their website for locations and availability.

Thanks Car Park Party, we can’t wait to see what you will put on next!
