Barcelona is the perfect destination for family bicycling and soaking up the sun and culture

Barcelona is a dreamy destination for cyclists and families. The city has it all: rich history, contemporary art and culture, great food, beautiful beaches and tons of exciting activities for children. It is also amazingly easy to navigate, with an excellent public transport system. Moreover, Barcelona has become more and more bicycle-friendly in recent years, so families can easily set their own pace on two wheels.

Barcelona is naturally well suited for bicycling, being flat, sunny and chock full of fascinating places to discover. Companies such as Donkey.bike rent bikes at a fair price and without any fuss – they also provide suggested bike routes to help you get a head start at exploring the city.

Barcelona provides amazing activities for all ages

Barcelona offers something for everyone, from excellent museums and architecture to sunny beaches and parks. It is a great destination for an active holiday with bicycling and swimming balanced out with great food and cultural sights.

Biking is an ideal way to traverse the city, as it provides you with the opportunity to stop and have a closer look at interesting things you see on your way – and this is bound to happen, because Barcelona is full of fascinating places and details! Although the municipal bike-sharing scheme is limited to use by residents, there are many places where you can conveniently rent a bike in Barcelona when visiting the city.

Barcelona is full of fun and culture

Some of the most well-known sights of Barcelona include Gaudí’s unfinished masterwork Sagrada Familia – one of the most Instagrammed places on the planet – and Park Güell, featuring more of his architectural wonders. Although these sights might not be the most exciting for kids, you’ll be glad to know that Barcelona is absolutely teeming with family-friendly activities as well.

The interactive science museum CosmoCaixa will provide endless fascination for those family members who are interested in stars and galaxies, while football fans can visit the FC Barcelona museum.  After absorbing some culture, the vast greenery of Parc de la Ciutadella is a perfect place for a picnic. The park also contains many activities for children, such as a free playing space full of toys and kiddie pools. Ciutadella park also contains the Barcelona zoo, sure to provide entertainment for an afternoon. The Magic Fountain show on Mountjuïc mountain will delight adults and children alike – and is completely free to attend!

Children will also love exploring the winding, mysterious paths and narrow alleyways of the Gothic Quarter. A swim and a spot of sun on excellent beaches such as the busy Barceloneta and the quieter Platja de Sant Sebastià, just 30 minutes away by train, are good fun for the whole family.

There are so many things to do and see in Barcelona, it’s hard to imagine a better place to spend a family holiday!
