Here are 5 Reasons why you should visit Giglio Island with Kids

NB This is a collaborative post

I adore Italy.  In fact I recently wrote a post about why I love Italy so much, yet despite this I still haven’t booked to go back with the kids.

I have however decided it is definitely definitely on the list for next year, but I’ve yet to decide where and have been drawn into looking at Elba, Sardinia and Giglio Island in Tuscany.

I’d heard of Sardinia before but Elba and Giglio Island are completely new to me, which means I now really want to go! For 5 reasons why you should visit Elba take a look at our post here.

Researching what there might be to do somewhere new is one of my favourite things so in no particular order here are 5 reasons why you should visit Giglio Island with kids when you are in Italy.

1. You get to Giglio Island by Ferry.

You drive to Porto Santo Stefano which is the little ‘island’ connected to the mainland and then take the ferry to Isola del Giglio.   This is already a reason to go for me and my kids. They love an adventure on a boat, and this trip is easily doable in a day making it a lovely day trip with your kids.

2. Giglio Island has some of Tuscany’s best beaches.

Cala Arenella is a wide sandy beach on the North Eastern tip which is wonderful for kids to run around on, however on a day trip Campese is Giglio’s most popular beach simply because you can catch the bus from Giglio Porto. Buses run every half an hour and tickets are around €2 each way.

“Le Cannelle” beach can be reached on foot (about 15 minutes) or by taxi from Giglio Porto. The beach has white sand and crystal-clear waters. It is an ideal place for children, too. The only problem is that because it’s not too far from the harbour, it can often be very crowded.  Out of season this problem does not exist.

3. You can get to Giglio Island easily from Rome and Pisa/Florence so definitely doable on a trip to the region, as it isn’t too far for the kids to travel.

4.Giglio Island is off the beaten path. Whilst it most certainly does get busy during peak times, that will be nothing in comparison to Rome and Florence.

5. The clear crystal waters make for fabulous snorkelling and swimming which my girls adore doing in the sea. There is just something so fun about doing that!
