Stick Man Trail, Delamere Forest

Share

In-between Christmas and New Year we met some friends and family at Delamere Forest on thankfully a stunning winters day.  The purpose of the visit was to do the Stick Man trail but it was also just a really nice excuse to catch up with some friends we haven’t seen for a while.

We have in the past done the Gruffalo Trail, the Gruffalo’s Child Trail and the Superworm Trail so the Stick Man trail had a lot to live up to.

We arrived at Delamere, found that everyone in the locality has had the same idea (car park was heaving!) and found our friends and family; all 18 of us.

We were surprised (although not displeased) to find that the Stick Man trail was a different route to the previous trails and as we set off we found this lovely large Stick Man which all the kids loved.  There was also a rather large bug.

The trail itself followed a similar format to the previous trails. Signs at various points along the trail suggesting you undertake different actuvities. We did have the activity packs too but unfortunately as the group was so large we didn’t quite manage to use those  very successfully.

Being picky I think the activities suggested by the previous trail have been easier to follow. It’s not so easy to play pooh sticks when there isn’t a river (signs a little too generic maybe) but the do ten star jumps etc are easy to do and good fun. More of those sort of activities would have worked well on a winter trail I think. You don’t necessarily want them collecting loads of sticks when it’s very very muddy but I still love the idea: if we hadn’t done one of the trails before we would have loved it and had nothing to compare it too!

At the end of the trail is another Stick Man, perfect for a group photo! The trail itself took around half an hour so quite a lot shorter than others we have done. It is accessible for a buggy/pram or little trike which we had with us in our group, but the mud did make them a little tricky to push. It has been particularly bad weather though!

As we finished the Stick Man trail quickly we thought we would do the route of the Gruffalo trail as well, as we assumed (rightly) the Gruffalo might still be there. First though it was time for a picnic as one of the families needed to head back. We found a large clearing in the woods and sat down on the large logs for a very festive picnic. Turkey and cranberry butties, Christmas cake and mince pies just some of the snacks on offer!

After the picnic we decided to build dens and this kept the kids (between 2 and 16) busy for a good half an hour: they would have carried on for longer but us adults were starting to get cold feet. Literally.

So we carried on our stroll and did thankfully find the Gruffalo.  We wandered back to the car park very happy walkers. It was a lovely day out!

  1. Love your photos Karen, we wanted to do this but we haven’t had a nice day when we were free to go. Trekking through Delamere sounds just about perfect right now, if only it wasn’t always raining. My boys love Stickman so we will try and get there before it finishes xx

  2. I’m so excited to take the boys to this. It’s one of our favourite books. We went to Delamere in-between Christmas and New Year last year and it was so busy that we had to abandoned the walk and head to the pub for lunch instead. So disappointing 😉 x

  3. Love the idea of these trails and the little activities. Such a good way of making walks more interesting for the kids. Off to find out if anyone round us offers something similar! #whatevertheweather

  4. What a fantastic day out. The signs do seem a bit of a let down if they haven’t researched into each site. We don’t have a trail around here so we have mad our own stick man today and are off to find his family tree tomorrow. Lovely post #whatevertheweather

  5. This looks amazing! I especially love the stick man sculpture, glad you all found the Gruffalo at the end of that trail too. The kids all look so happy, they clearly had a lot of fun together. Fantastic photos. 🙂 x

  6. What a fab idea for getting together with friends in that ‘in-between bit’. We’ve not done any of the Julia Donaldson inspired trails – I haven’t seen one close enough to us yet but I know Tin Box Tot would be beside herself. Maybe this year! #Whatevertheweather

  7. Such beautiful photos. This walk sounds fab! I love the themes of the Julia Donaldsons made into walks. I’ve heard and read about the others and they sound like so much fun and really interactive. When Evie’s a bit older (she adores the gruffalo) we’re going to go in search for some. Thank you so much for linking this to #whatevertheweather. xx
