We love Portugal here at Mini Travellers and have been on some fantastic trips to the Algarve recently, Lisbon and Porto too. Â
Portugal is completely affordable destination whether you put the trip together yourself and book flights and accommodation or book a package holiday. So why do we think it is so fabulous and why do we think you should visit Portugal with children?
1. Bucket & Spade Beaches

We do love a trip to Greece but the beaches don’t always live up to the kids expectations when it comes to building sandcastles. They are often too white and powdery or rocky. This is not the case with Portugal’s beaches. They are long, often empty and definitely proper hard sand, sandcastle beaches. A win for my three.
2. Custard Tarts
I’ve been following Mummy Travel‘s recent holiday in Portugal and her facebook pictures of portuguese custard tarts make me want to take the kids straight away! With a bakery on every corner and fabulous offerings wherever you are, the kids (and me) would be in heaven.
3. Possibly Europe’s best climate for kids
Mild winters with temperatures that rarely drop below 5ºC along the coast and hot summers that are refreshed by the Atlantic breeze with the highest number of hours of sunshine in Europe. It really is hard to beat.
4. Surfing
Portugal has huge waves, so whilst I am not saying you and the kids will come home being able to surf! It is the perfect place to learn to body board if not to surf itself as a surf school is likely to be in throwing distance from wherever you stay.
5. Lagoa dos Salgados
The kids could watch birds for hours and Portugal is home to over 300 species of bird. 150 of those live in one area Lagoa dos Salgados which is really not very far from the Algarve hot spots and easy to access. My three would love to spend an afternoon trying to see what they could spot and soaking up the atmosphere!

I travelled to the Algarve with my children a few years ago. We stayed in a big villa with lots of extended family and had our own pool. What really stood out for me was how friendly everyone was, the whole island is covered in beautiful flowers and the food is to die for.
I’ve duly pinned this post for later! We’ve never been to Portugal, but your description of the sand was enticing. We do like a beach fort-making session!
We have never been to Portugal but my mum has been a few times. I would love to take the kids for a chilled out holiday one day. Another one for the travel list x
Thanks for mentioning my trip and including the photo – I love Portugal: Lisbon is one of my favourite cities and I love the Algarve and Alentejo too. It was great exploring the coast west of Lisbon too, around Cascais and near Sintra, some amazing beaches.
We did Portugal pre-kids and didn’t love it (mainly due to it being off-season and surprisingly cold when we went!) but looks like we should definitely give it another go with the children.
Portugal is wonderful! Been for the first time last spring and totally loved it… the beaches, the monasteries and castles, Lisbon, the whole athmosphere. Will definately return!
