North Star Club – A Woodland Escape

On Friday night just a week after we had got back from our trip to Florida we set off across the M62 for a weekend in a cabin in the woods. The two experiences couldn’t be more different, but that’s the beauty of travelling, you can experience the crazy busy and the peace and quiet and love them both just as much.

North Star Club in-between Beverley and York (in Sancton) is definitely an intimate campsite, reminiscent of an American camp and described by North Star as more akin to a woodland hotel than a cabin.  There are just eight cabins currently which are nestled into some simply stunning woodland.

We arrived on Friday a little later than the advertised check in of 4-7, however we did find the directions on the website a little tricky to follow. Basically if you end up in Sancton which isn’t too hard to find, you just turn down the road at the side of the The Star at Sancton where the car park is and the entrance to North Star is about 400m on your left.

We were shown to our cabin (Woodville) which we could drive to and drop our bags off at,  before returning the car to the car park.  First impressions were just wow! The bathroom was bigger than ours at home I think and was beautifully done.

The bed in the middle of the large double bedroom was beautiful and there was a real sense of style. The kids were thrilled and we quickly settled down on the veranda for a glass of wine and some bread and cheese. I think we managed to to get the kids settled at around 10pm not in anyway down to the lack of comfort simply due to the excitement levels of ‘camping’ in the woods!  When I say camping I say that very very loosely – this was not camping or even really glamping.

The next morning started at around 6.30am (the curtains are quite thin if you’re travelling with little ones) and what a morning it was. The light in the woods was beautiful and you can open the double doors to the main bedroom and the doors onto the veranda and the light just streams in.

The bedroom with the bunks in it felt a little small if I’m honest, it was probably half the size of the bathroom, and probably only a little bigger than the storage cupboard for all your bags, additional duvet, hangers etc (in fact the very very useful hide everything in cupboard that also contained the washing up bowl and washing up liquid that I didn’t find until we were leaving!).

There had been a hen party on site drinking fizz in the Woodshed (communal beautiful area below) when we arrived, but the cabins are so well spaced out we didn’t hear them at all over the weekend and I hope they didn’t hear our kids too early either.

Whilst there are loads of things to do in close vicinity to Sancton – Polo, Flamborough Head, York, Beverley and lots more; we decided that after the crazy time we had had in Florida we would leave the car well and truly in the car park and spend Saturday wandering round the estate.

We are so glad we did just look at how stunning the walk was:

We walked all morning and spent ages exploring the woods,  hiding in the magnolia bushes and guessing what animals had made the marks on the ground.  The little walk on site is a couple of miles long and took us an hour or so with 5 and 4 year olds, about 30 minutes on your own.  There are however much longer walks that are being marked out, probably as I type and they will be well worth walking round.  We saw a deer and lots of pheasants but the peacocks we could hear proved elusive.

After lunch it was den building time just outside our cabin. if you are visiting with children then I can highly recommend Woodville as the area for den building is perfect and right outside your back door. Ours could happily play out there at 4 & 5 without us watching them the whole time, there was even a rope swing which they could play on.

When it was time for dinner it was only right that as we were ‘camping’ we had a BBQ.  We had taken our own things with us to cook and stored it in the little fridge in the cabin, but you can also order a BBQ pack to be delivered to you from The Star at Sancton.  We even made gooey marshmallow and chocolate cones.

With the BBQ alight we had a little treat. The peacocks which had been so elusive before, came to us. Right to our veranda. We sat and watched them for ages and the girls loved it. Definitely a highlight of the weekend for me, watching them watch such beautiful birds up close.

It was a little on the chilly side that evening so we sat on our huge double bed watching out at the woods whilst reading our books.  No tele, no wifi, makes for some enforced off grid time (there is however 3g most of the time so don’t panic!).

Now all this luxury does come at a price. Our weekend would have cost us £685 for two nights which is on the pricey side. It makes it exclusive. It makes it a treat. It is beautiful and we did love it. For me I would have appreciated my plates being washed for over £300 a night and maybe a little more information in the cabin about what I could do and where I could do it although this information is emailed to your beforehand.

However for a peaceful relaxed weekend in stunning surroundings North Star Club is simply perfect.

  1. Wow! Amazing photos. We stayed her last year but without the kids so it was great to read a review with the little ones along. I love all the pictures of the girls just plain playing in the forest. Thanks for linking up with #YorkshireFamily
