I gave myself a bit of a challenge this Easter School Holiday … I wanted to go away for a few days, somewhere I could go on my own with our two boys (aged 4 and 6) for the first night, with my husband joining us for the weekend (by train), without breaking the bank.

We do have own our tent but I felt the weather was still a bit too cold, so I decided to explore the world of glamping!  I went onto coolcamping.com which has a great selection of campsites and came across Watkinsons Farm in Ormskirk.  This seemed to tick all the boxes, so I contacted Abi, who from the start was brilliant.  Abi and her husband Ian run a 120 acre farm whilst looking after their 3 children (all under 6), and after enjoying camping in the little woods at the far end of the farm, decided to set up a small campsite.  It currently just has two bell tents but with the possibility to grow.  For me, this was one of the great attractions though.

Onto the nitty gritty: The farm was easy to find, we were made very welcome with both the indoor log burner and outdoor fire ready laid.  The tent consisted of a proper double bed (firm but very comfy), camping bunk beds for the boys (they were delighted!), a giant beanbag, large plastic storage boxes under the beds and plenty more storage tables to fit everything in.  In addition there is a large storage box filled with everything you need for cooking, eating, drinking etc (although obviously you need to bring your own food and drink!) and a cool box which they replace the ice blocks daily.  Outside the tent is a seating area around a fire with cooking tripod and grill.  Just behind the tent is a compost toilet and on the other side a shower and washing up area.

It is also has plenty to do nearby, with a farm shop and pub within walking distance and some great family days out.  We went to the WWT Martin Mere wetland centre one day and the National Trust Rufford Old Hall on the other day.  If you are lucky with the weather, there’s space to play outside in the woods and the field. See their website for more ideas.

The bits to consider:

  • The toilets and shower are outdoors – I was very proud of having my first shower as it was brisk, despite the warm water! I did get used to it, and when it was warmer outside (we were lucky with the weather) it was very pleasant!
  • It takes a while to boil the kettle (due to a max temperature for the log burner) so if you like a hot cup of tea when you wake up, maybe think about bringing a camping stove.

The best bits:

  • Take up the offer of a food order with the local butcher – you can’t beat cooking on an open fire with local produce.
  • I would recommend embracing the outdoors – turn your phones off and go feral! Your children will love you forever!
