In our pre-children days, I used to love luxurious mini-breaks where Rich and I could relax and unwind, and I honestly thought that I would have to say goodbye to these kind of breaks for the foreseeable future when we had kids. I was proven that this didn’t have to be the case when Darwin Escapes recently invited us to stay in one of their lodges at Cheddar Woods Resort and Spa in Somerset, on the edge of Cheddar in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The site was redeveloped in 2013, and the whole site has obviously been well-planned and carefully thought out. The resort is also close to Cheddar Gorge and Caves, Wooky Hole, Wells, Glastonbury and Weston-Super-Mare, so plenty to explore outside of the resort too.

The lodges are positioned to maximize privacy and reduce being overlooked by other lodges. There are 13 different types of lodge available to stay in at Cheddar Woods, the largest accommodates up to 8 people. We were staying in a Cheddar Lodge Premier which sleeps four.

Our lodge had two bedrooms; a twin bedroom which was perfect for the girls to share and a master double bedroom with ensuite shower room. Both rooms also had flat screen TVs. There was a family bathroom, with bath which means that the girls could have a bath at the end of the day rather than a shower.

The main living area of the lodge consisted of an open plan kitchen/lounge/diner, including a 40″ HD flat screen TV, DVD player and iPod docking station. You could hire out Nintendo Wii consoles, games and DVDs. There was also free Wifi. The kitchen was well-equipped with microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer and a washing machine and everything else you would need to cook family meals easily, making it absolutely perfect for a family self-catering holiday.

Patio doors from the living area lead onto a private decking area with a table and chairs and outdoor hot tub.

The luxury didn’t stop at the lodges. You could have a bit of pampering at the luxurious Eden Spa, which offers a range of face and body massages, waxing, body wraps, pedicures and manicures, or just unwind in the sauna or steam room. If relaxing breaks have to be a bit more active,  you can partake in some rock climbing or archery, take a dip in the swimming pool or work out in the air-conditioned gym, before relaxing in the bar area with a drink of enjoying a game of bowling, pool or on the golf simulator.

For the kids, there was a great outdoor play area, however, the weather was not great during our stay, so the girls (and daddy) stuck to the soft play area.

The highlight had to be having our own private hot tub on the decking of our lodge. Freyja was desperate to get in, and we had some lovely mummy-daughter time together, chilling out in the hot tub together. I think this photo pretty much sums up what Freyja thought of our break at Cheddar Woods Resort and Spa.

All-in-all Cheddar Woods Resort and Spa really does make for a luxurious, yet child-friendly break with plenty to keep the whole family entertained!
